Under the hood

How identification works

  1. 1

    Normalise

We clean the descriptor and pull out its parts — prefixes, store numbers, phone numbers, locations.

  2. 2

    Detect the processor

Prefixes like SQ*, TST* or PAYPAL* reveal who processed the payment — often not who you actually paid.

  3. 3

    Match the merchant

Verified descriptor mappings, merchant aliases and abbreviations — then AI and live web research when the database can't answer.

  4. 4

    Weigh the evidence

Every conclusion gets a confidence score and a plain-English explanation. When evidence is weak, we say so.

We never present guesses as facts. Results come back as likely merchant, possible match or we could not verify this merchant — each with a confidence level and the evidence behind it.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is this charge on my bank statement?

Bank statements show a cryptic descriptor — often the payment processor (SQ*, TST*, PAYPAL*) rather than the shop you actually bought from. Paste the exact line into StatementDecoder and we identify the most likely merchant using processor prefixes, descriptor databases, merchant aliases and, when needed, AI and live web research — each answer with a confidence level and the evidence behind it.

Can I analyse my whole statement at once?

Yes. Upload a statement (PDF, CSV, Excel, OFX/QFX or a photo) and every transaction is identified in one pass, with subscriptions, recurring charges, duplicates, price rises and bank fees flagged automatically — plus a plain-English summary.

Which banks and formats are supported?

Over 5,000 banks and money apps worldwide — Chase, Bank of America, Barclays, HSBC, Revolut, Wise, Monzo and thousands more. Statements can be PDF, CSV, Excel, OFX/QFX or scanned images, and you can export clean CSV, Excel, QuickBooks (QBO), Xero, QIF, OFX or JSON.

Is it safe to upload my bank statement?

Yes. We never ask for your bank login, card and account numbers are redacted before anything is stored, the original file is deleted within 24 hours, and analysed reports stay in your dashboard only for your plan's retention period. We provide informational matches, never financial advice.

Is StatementDecoder free?

Single-charge lookups are free, and a free account converts one statement page every 24 hours. Paid Pro and Business plans add more pages, bulk uploads, more export formats and AI web research on stubborn descriptors.

Will it tell me who a recurring subscription really is?

Yes — recurring charges are grouped by merchant with their cadence, next likely charge date and estimated yearly cost, so forgotten subscriptions and free-trials-turned-paid are easy to spot and cancel.
